Port Clinton, PA

Port Clinton is an interesting little town. The railroad was what made Port Clinton and the mining companies that used to be here are represented in the picture below. The rail yard has been rebuilt to look like it once did with the depot and train cars. Today, the trail leads right down a very steep and rocky hill to the tracks. The trail then takes you into the town of Port Clinton where there is a hikers' pavilion where hikers camp between the river and the highway. There is a pretty nasty privy there, too. Main Street includes a hotel with restaurant and bar, a barber shop, a restaurant, a post office, and several other little places. It is a tiny place that was probably a thriving town during the mining and rail years.

The barber not only cuts hair for $8, he serves donuts and coffee to the hikers who come each morning to have some.

The hikers' pavilion is off to the left, not in the picture.

This hand-written sign was on a telephone pole on the street by a house that was close to the street. As water is sometimes hard to find, this was a very nice gesture by a true trail angel.

JJ, Chrissy, Chris after coming off the trail in Port Clinton after a miserable hike in cold rain. We are at the hotel where they drank hot tea and had a hot meal. I had taken the day off as Betty was visiting. We drove to meet them at the hotel.
