from the hiker's wife... how fate can bring people together.
Today I went with a former colleague to a meeting in Hartford for retired teachers regarding our insurance. It was not something either of us wanted to have to deal with, but because the state of CT underfunded the teachers' retirement for years, we now have to go with different insurance. It is an option, but financially there's not much choice.
That said, it was good for Barbara and me to be able to catch up. I met Barbara when we first moved to Cromwell in 1984 when we were in a babysitting coop together. Then we taught at Cromwell High for many years together. Her husband, Al, had hiked a good portion of the trail a few years back, but had to quit because he got sick. I told her that Steve was back on the trail heading north from Springer Mountain. She told me that their friend whom Al had met when hiking was also back on the trail. She said his name was Steve and that he was from Willimantic or Willington. One of those towns over there!
When Steve called tonight he said there was a guy at the hostel who was from Mansfield and that his name was Steve. I told him to ask him if he new Barbara and Al and sure enough, he did! It was Al's friend whom he'd hiked with years ago! It is amazing what the Trail does and who it connects!
We miss you, Steve!
